Can You Sell a Car With Missing Parts?

Blog · By Free Junk Car Hauling · Updated · 4 min read

Maybe someone stole the wheels. Maybe you pulled the engine for a project that never came together. Either way, the car in front of you is not all there, and you are wondering whether anyone will take it.

Someone may, but missing parts do change the conversation. The more honest you are about what is gone, the faster you will get a straight answer.

Short answer

It depends on what is gone, and it is worth asking. A missing part can lower an offer, because condition and parts demand are two of the five things we weigh. Incomplete vehicles (a shell) may carry a pickup fee or may be declined. List exactly what is missing and call (206) 941-0612. We will tell you whether we can take it.

What each missing part means

What is missingWhat it meansWhat to do
Engine or transmissionA big loss of weight and parts. The vehicle may count as incomplete.Say which one is gone. If you still have it, ask whether it can go with the car.
Catalytic converterA missing part, and it may have been stolen. If stolen, see our stolen converter guide. If you have the part, see how the converter affects an offer.
Wheels and tiresLoading is the main question. The car can’t roll.See flat tires or no wheels. Do not buy tires just to move it.
Battery, radiator, alternatorSmaller parts, but still part of what makes up condition.Mention them.
Doors, hood, seats, glassBody parts have their own demand.Note what is gone, and clear loose glass from where people will walk.
KeysA loading question, not a part. See junking a car with no keys.Tell us up front.

We can’t say from this page how a particular car will come out. The answer depends on the rest of the vehicle: year and model, condition, demand for parts, weight and size, and towing distance.

When a car counts as a shell

A shell is what is left when a vehicle has been stripped of its major parts. Incomplete vehicles may carry a pickup fee or may be declined. There is no fixed checklist on this page for where “missing some parts” becomes “a shell”, because it comes down to the particular vehicle.

So do not guess. Tell us what is gone, send up to 3 photos on our form, and ask us directly. If a fee applies, ask for the amount and get it before pickup. Then you can compare it with other ways of clearing the car.

What to check before you call

  • Open the hood if it is safe, and look for the engine, battery and radiator.
  • Look at all four wheels. Note any on blocks or stands, and stay out from under the car.
  • From the side, look for a cut exhaust pipe, which can mean the converter was taken.
  • Find the VIN plate on the dash. If it is gone, see old car with a missing VIN plate.
  • Find your paperwork. We need one of these: Title, Affidavit in Lieu of Title, or Junk Vehicle Affidavit.
  • Gather any removed parts in one place and write them down.

If the parts were stolen

Before you sell, think about insurance. A theft may be something your policy handles, so call your insurer before you repair or sell anything. Take photos and report the theft to the police. Selling the car first could make the claim harder. Our stolen converter guide covers how to weigh a claim against selling.

Your insurer can tell you what your policy covers.

Other ways to handle it

Replace the part

If the car is otherwise good, get a written quote and compare it with what the car would be worth afterward. Our repair or junk guide walks through it.

Sell it to a hobbyist

Someone restoring the same model may want what is left. For a private sale, you still need to release interest in the title, and you must report the sale to DOL within five business days. This guide covers selling on a marketplace safely.

Don’t take more off

If you are tempted to pull the rest before selling, read whole or part it out first. Each piece you remove can take the car closer to being a shell.

If you want to sell it to us

Call (206) 941-0612 and tell us what is missing. If we can take it, we will come on a flatbed, tow for free and pay cash at pickup. See how it works and scrap car removal.

Common questions

Possibly. A car with no engine may count as incomplete, and incomplete vehicles may carry a pickup fee or may be declined. Tell us what you have and we will give you a straight answer.
