How Much Is My Junk Car Worth in the Seattle Area?

Blog · By Free Junk Car Hauling · Updated · 4 min read

You typed the question into a search box because you want a number. Here is the straight truth: nobody can give you an honest one without knowing the car. Two vehicles that look alike in a driveway can bring very different offers, and any figure printed on a web page was not worked out for yours.

So this guide does not list dollar amounts. It shows you what goes into the number, so you can estimate where your car stands, spot the things that help or hurt it, and get a real quote for your car in one phone call.

Short answer

A junk car’s worth depends on five things: year and model, condition, demand for its parts, weight and size, and how far it has to be towed. No fair price can be given without those details. For a real number, send us the details at our pickup form or call (206) 941-0612. Towing is free and we pay cash at pickup.

The five things behind every offer we make

When we work out an offer, these are the things we look at. Each one answers a different question about the car.

FactorThe question it answersWhat to have ready
Year and modelWhat is this vehicle, and how much of it is still wanted?Year, make, model and trim, from the registration or title
ConditionIs it complete? Does it run? What is damaged?A plain list of what works, what does not and what is missing
Demand for partsDo people still need parts from this vehicle?Nothing to look up. Just give the exact model and engine if you know it
Weight and sizeHow much metal is there, and what does it take to haul?Body type: compact, sedan, SUV, van, pickup
Towing distanceHow far does the truck go to get it?The address or nearest cross street, and the town

No single line decides the number. A heavy truck that is missing half its parts and a light car that is complete and wanted can end up in very different places than their size alone suggests.

Work through your own car

Take five minutes with these questions. You will not end up with a dollar figure, but you will know which way your car leans before anyone quotes it.

  1. Year and model

Write down exactly what it is. A newer or common model usually has more buyers for its parts than something rare and long out of production. That is a general pattern and has exceptions, which is why the exact model matters.

  2. Condition

Start it if it is safe to try. Then walk around it. Note the engine, transmission, wheels, catalytic converter, doors and glass. Is anything gone or badly damaged? Our guide on what can lower an offer goes through the list.

  3. Parts demand

You can’t really measure this yourself, and you do not need to. Just give the buyer the model, and engine size if you know it.

  4. Weight and size

Note the body type. See how vehicle weight affects an offer if you want to look up the actual figure.

  5. Distance

Give the real location of the car, which may differ from your home address. We pick up around Seattle, Tacoma, Kent, Renton, Auburn, Bellevue, Kirkland, Lynnwood, Federal Way and Everett.

Two sample cars, compared

Here is how the factors can pull in different directions. These are made-up examples to show the logic. They are not real quotes.

FactorSample A: complete sedan that will not start, parked in KentSample B: full-size pickup, engine pulled, parked far out of town
Year and modelCommon commuter modelOlder work truck
ConditionWhole car, dead engine or battery unknownMajor part missing, so it may count as incomplete
Parts demandMany parts still on itFewer parts left
Weight and sizeLighterHeavier, which helps
Towing distanceShort tow, which helpsLong tow, which does not

A reader looking only at weight would pick the truck. We look at all five, and Sample B may even carry a pickup fee or be declined, because incomplete vehicles can. That is why two people comparing their cars at a barbecue can get such different answers.

When your car may be worth more than a junk offer

Some cars called “junk” are not. If yours runs, drives safely and passes for an ordinary used car, a private sale or a dealer trade may bring more than any junk buyer will, even after the effort involved. If it needs one repair and is otherwise sound, compare a written repair quote with what the car would sell for fixed.

Our guides on whether to junk, sell or donate and finding what an old car is worth can help you check. We would rather you know this before you call.

How to get a real number

Three ways work, and all of them start with the details above.

  • Fill out our pickup form and attach up to 3 photos. Our guide on which photos to send takes the guessing out.
  • Call (206) 941-0612. We are open 7 days, 8 AM to 11 PM, and we call back within 4 hours.
  • Get a second quote from another licensed buyer, which you can check on DOL’s license lookup, and compare them fairly. Our guide on why offers differ explains what to compare.

Tell us the truth about what is missing or broken. An offer can only be as good as the information behind it, and this list covers what to mention. You can also read more about how we buy cars for cash.

Common questions

We do not publish a figure, because it depends on the year and model, condition, parts demand, weight and size, and towing distance. Send us the details or call (206) 941-0612 and we will give you a number for your car.
