What Can Lower a Junk Car Offer
A rough car is expected in this business. Nobody calls a junk car buyer about a showroom car, so dents, stains and a dead engine are nothing to apologize for. What can pull the number down is more specific than that.
Knowing the list helps in two ways. You can avoid the problems you control, and you can raise the rest up front so they do not come as a surprise when the truck pulls in.

Short answer
Offers can come down when parts are missing, the car is far from the truck, or what shows up does not match what was described. Incomplete vehicles (a shell) may carry a pickup fee or may be declined. Tell the buyer about any problem up front, and ask what would change the number before you agree to a pickup.
The list, at a glance
| Problem | Which factor it touches | Can you prevent it? |
|---|---|---|
| Missing engine, transmission, wheels or converter | Condition, parts demand, weight | Yes, if it is still on the car: leave it |
| Heavy damage from a crash or fire | Condition, parts demand | No, but describe it plainly |
| Long tow | Towing distance | Rarely, but give the true location |
| Model with little parts demand | Year and model, parts demand | No |
| Details that do not match | All of them | Yes, by being accurate |
| Hard-to-reach spot | The job itself | Sometimes, by clearing the way or asking first |
Missing parts
This is the big one. Each major part gone takes away weight, parts demand or both. Enough missing parts can turn a car into a shell. Incomplete vehicles may carry a pickup fee or may be declined. We cannot tell you where that line falls without knowing the car, so list what is missing when you call.
If a part was stolen, say that too. Our guide on selling a car with missing parts goes through specific parts, and our stolen converter guide covers what to do first after a theft.
A long tow
Towing distance is one of our five factors. Our towing is free, so you do not pay a towing bill, but a longer trip is part of how an offer is worked out. It is more honest to say that out loud than to pretend distance has no effect.
Give the car’s actual location, not your home address, if they differ. A car parked at a relative’s place in another town is a different job than one in your driveway. If it is outside our service area, call and ask.
Details that do not match
A quote is based on what the buyer was told. Here are mismatches to check for before you send anything:
- The year or trim on your note differs from the registration
- “It runs” when it has not started in a year
- “All there” when the wheels are on blocks or the converter is gone
- Photos that are old or hide the damaged side
- Interior or trunk full of items that must come out first
If the car does not match what was described, expect the buyer to want to talk about the number again. You are free to say no, and our guide on what to do if the price drops at pickup covers that moment. Being accurate from the start is the simple way to avoid it. See what to tell a buyer.
A spot that is hard to reach
A car in an underground garage, behind a locked gate or boxed in by other vehicles can be harder to load. Access is not one of our five listed factors, but a truck that can’t reach the car can’t take it. Ask about it up front, and see our guides on tight spots and apartment and condo lots.
Things that may not matter as much as you fear
Before you apologize for your car, know that some things come with the territory:
- It does not run. We pick up cars that do not run. Condition counts, but a dead car is not a problem for a flatbed. See non-running car removal.
- It is ugly. Peeling paint and a torn seat are not the same as a missing engine.
- Flat tires. Tell us, and see flat tires or no wheels.
- Expired tabs. DOL says a car can be sold with expired registration. See expired tabs on a junk car.
- Wrecked. See our wrecked car page. If there is an open insurance claim, talk to the insurer first.
If you have a question about a specific problem, call (206) 941-0612. We will tell you what it means for your car. Do not assume the worst, and do not throw parts away to tidy things up. The flip side of this list is in what can raise an offer.
