How to Erase Personal Data From a Car Before It Goes

Blog · By Free Junk Car Hauling · Updated · 4 min read

Your car knows more about you than you might think. It may remember your phone’s contacts, the route to your kids’ school and the button that opens your garage. A dead car doesn’t forget just because it stopped running.

Clearing this takes a few minutes if the car still powers on. If it doesn’t, you still have things you can do. Menus differ by make and year, so use this as a list of what to look for, and check your owner’s manual for the exact steps.

Short answer

If the car still powers on, delete paired phones, clear navigation history and saved addresses, erase built-in garage buttons, then run a factory reset if there is one. Remove the car from any manufacturer app, and cancel its connected service. If the car won’t power on, do the app and account steps from your phone and take any removable media.

What a car may have stored

What’s in your car depends on its age and trim. Older cars with a basic radio may hold almost nothing. Newer ones may hold quite a lot:

WhereWhat may be thereWhy it matters
Bluetooth and phone settingsPaired phones, and sometimes copied contacts and call lists.Names and phone numbers.
NavigationHome and work addresses, recent trips, saved places.Where you live and when you tend to be there.
Built-in garage buttonsCodes for your garage or gate.Access to your home.
Connected services and appsYour account, and sometimes remote lock and location.A live link between you and the car.
Infotainment loginsMusic, email or Wi-Fi accounts.Passwords and account access.
Removable mediaUSB drives, SD cards, dash camera cards.Photos, video and files.

If the car still powers on

Work in this order. If you need to power up the car, do it outdoors, and don’t let an engine run in a closed garage.

  1. Delete paired phones

In the phone or Bluetooth menu, remove every device. Then delete the car from your phone’s Bluetooth list as well.

  2. Clear navigation

Delete your home and work addresses, saved places and recent destinations.

  3. Log out of apps

Sign out of music, email or other accounts, and tell the car to forget your home Wi-Fi.

  4. Erase the garage buttons

Many cars have a way to clear those built-in buttons. Check your owner’s manual, because the steps differ. Do this one even if you skip the rest.

  5. Run a factory reset, if there is one

Look for words like “reset”, “restore defaults” or “clear personal data” in the settings menu. Do this last, then check that the addresses and phones are gone.

  6. Take your media

Pull any USB drive, SD card and dash camera card.

If the car will not power on

You can’t clear the screen on a dead car, unless a jump start brings it back. Don’t spend money on a battery just for this, and don’t attempt a jump if you aren’t comfortable doing it or the battery looks damaged or is leaking. You can still protect most of what matters from your phone or computer:

  • Remove the car from its app. Log in to the manufacturer’s app or site and delete the vehicle from your account.
  • Cancel the connected service. Call the manufacturer’s support line if you need to, and confirm that the subscription has stopped.
  • Change your garage code. If you can’t clear the built-in buttons, change the code at your garage or gate instead. Your opener’s manual will explain how.
  • Change passwords for any account you may have used in the car.
  • Take the removable media. Those don’t need power to remove.
  • Take paper records. Our clean-out checklist covers what else is in the car.

Accounts tied to the car

Your car may also be on lists outside the car. Go through these after it’s sold:

  • Toll account. Remove the car and its plate.
  • Parking apps and permits. Delete the plate from each.
  • Roadside assistance and insurance apps. Remove the car. Call your insurer with the date of sale.
  • Satellite radio or similar subscriptions. Cancel them.
  • Rewards or service accounts at a dealer or shop. Remove the car if you want to.

The official piece stays the same. DOL says sellers are legally obligated to remove the plates, and you need to file your Report of Sale within five business days. Our after-the-sale guide covers it.

How far to go

Vehicles we buy go to auto steel recyclers, where they are drained, stripped of tires and batteries, crushed and melted down. So the car is on its way to a place where a screen won’t matter. You still shouldn’t skip this, because you won’t be around to watch each step, and a garage button only takes a minute to clear.

Modern cars can also have memory you can’t reach, such as control modules and event data. A factory reset may not touch those, and we can’t tell you what your particular car keeps. If you have a specific concern, ask the manufacturer. Don’t try to pull the modules out yourself. Removing parts can change your offer. See what can lower an offer.

If you are selling to a private buyer, take this more seriously, since that person may keep driving the car and using its screen.

Common questions

It’s worth a few minutes. A garage button or a saved address is easy to clear and gives you peace of mind. You won’t be there to see each step after the car leaves.
