Mold in Your Car: Clean It or Let It Go?

Blog · By Free Junk Car Hauling · Updated · 4 min read

You opened the door and got that musty smell. Now you can see it: fuzzy spots on the seats, a gray bloom on the seat belts, or a carpet that never dries. It is easy to think a spray and a scrub will take care of it.

Sometimes that works. Often it does not, because mold is a sign of water that keeps getting in, and in a damp climate like ours, a parked car can stay wet for a long time. So the real question is how far the moisture has gone.

Short answer

Find the water source first. If mold is limited, the leak can be fixed and the carpets and padding can dry out, then professional cleaning can save the car. If it has soaked into the padding, seats or air system, or it came from a flood, doing it right takes much more. Let the car go if the cost is more than the value it restores, or anyone’s health suffers.

Be careful with your health first

Mold can bother some people, and it can be a bigger problem for people with asthma, allergies or weak immune systems. If you or someone who rides in the car gets symptoms that may be related, ask a doctor, and stop using the car until it is dealt with.

  • Air the car out before you work in it, and keep windows open while you do.
  • Wear gloves and a well-fitting mask if you are going to touch or remove anything.
  • Do not run the fan or air conditioning until you know the vents are clean.
  • Never mix cleaning products. Bleach mixed with some cleaners can make dangerous fumes.
  • Leave heavy growth to a professional.

Find out where the water comes from

Cleaning without stopping the water means you are going to do this again. These are the usual suspects, and a mechanic or body shop can test for them.

Sitting also matters. A car that has been parked for months, particularly under trees, may be growing mold without any major leak. See revive or junk a car that has sat for years.

How deep has it gone?

  • Light surface growth

A few spots on hard surfaces or the seat fabric. The leak is fixed and the padding underneath is dry. Likely to be saveable.

  • Moderate

Carpet is damp, and the smell stays after surface cleaning. Carpet and padding may need to come out and dry fully, or be replaced.

  • Deep

Seat foam, headliner or padding throughout are affected. May require removing much of the interior.

  • In the air system

Musty smell every time the fan runs. A shop may need to reach and treat the air box and evaporator, which can be hard to get at.

If you find mold inside the car and the car has been through high water, read our guide to a flood-damaged car. Corrosion in wiring is often a bigger concern than the smell.

What doing it right involves

We will not quote what this costs, because it varies a lot. Instead, ask a professional detailer or upholstery shop to give you a written quote that spells out these steps:

  1. Fix the leak

Ask who is doing this and whether it has been tested. Water testing before and after is a good sign.

  2. Remove what cannot be cleaned

Soaked padding and foam may need to come out. Ask what is being replaced and what it will look like afterward.

  3. Dry it fully

This is where shortcuts fail. Ask how they dry it and how they know it is dry.

  4. Clean and treat the interior

Ask what they use, whether it is safe in an enclosed space and how long the car must air out.

  5. Deal with the air system

Ask whether the cabin filter, vents and air box are included.

  6. Ask what happens if it returns

Is there any warranty or follow-up? If the smell comes back, what then?

Then compare the full quote with what the car is worth. If there is also a repair needed to stop the water, add that too.

Clean it or let it go

Cleaning makes sense whenLetting it go makes sense when
The source is clear and fixedThe source cannot be found, or keeps coming back
Growth is limited to surfaces or easily replaced partsMold has reached deep into the seats, headliner or air system
The car is otherwise reliable and worth keepingThe car also needs big mechanical work
The full quote is well below the value it restoresThe full quote is close to or above that value
No one riding in it has health concernsSomeone in your household has asthma or is reacting to it

If you sell it

Tell a private buyer about the mold and the water source, since it may affect their health as well. Do not cover the smell with air freshener and hope for the best.

If you decide to sell to us, a moldy car is treated like any other: condition is one of the factors in the offer, along with year and model, demand for parts, weight and size, and towing distance. The car does not have to run, and the tow is free. Take your things out first, and if you cannot go inside comfortably, wear a mask. Our guide to cleaning out a car tells you what to remove.

Common questions

It may help with light, surface growth, but it will not solve the problem if water keeps getting in or if the padding underneath is wet. Find and fix the water first.
