Repair or Junk

How to Find What Your Old Car Is Worth Before Repairing It

Blog · By Free Junk Car Hauling · Updated · 4 min read

Before you pay for a big repair, you want to know one thing: is this car worth it? That can be hard to answer, because your car is worth a few different amounts, depending on who is buying it and what shape it is in.

It only takes an evening to get close. You will end up with two numbers: what it would be worth fixed, and what you could get for it as it is today.

Short answer

Look up your exact year, model, trim and mileage in an online pricing guide. Then check what similar cars are listed for near you, and adjust for condition honestly. That gives you a value once fixed. For the value as it is now, ask for a junk car offer and, if the car runs, gauge private buyers. Compare both with your repair quote.

Your car has more than one value

ValueWhat it meansWhere to get it
Fixed, private saleWhat a local buyer might pay once the repair is done.Pricing guides and local listings.
Fixed, trade-inWhat a dealer might allow toward another car.Pricing guides, or ask a dealer.
Unfixed, private saleWhat a buyer might pay knowing about the problem.Listings of similar cars described as needing work.
Unfixed, junk offerWhat a junk car buyer will pay, with the tow included.Ask for an offer with the facts about your car.

For a repair decision, the two that matter most are the fixed private-sale value and the best realistic unfixed value. An insurer’s total-loss value is a separate thing, worked out by its own rules. If that is your situation, read how to dispute a total loss value.

Step by step: find the fixed value

  1. Gather the exact details

Year, make, model, trim, engine, drive type, mileage and VIN. These are on your registration and the car itself. Trim can change the value more than you would expect.

  2. Check two online pricing guides

Enter the same details in each, and look at the private-party figure, not the dealer retail figure. Expect them to disagree a little. That gap shows you a realistic range.

  3. Search local listings

Search for the same model within a similar range of years and mileage in the Seattle and Tacoma area. Save several, and note the asking price, mileage and described condition.

  4. Remember that asking is not selling

Listings show what sellers hope to get. A car that has been listed for a long time may be priced too high. Treat these as the top of your range.

  5. Adjust for the rest of your car

Apply the condition check below, then settle on a single realistic figure.

Be honest about condition

Most of us think our own car is in better shape than it is. A buyer will not. Walk around the car as if you were the one paying, and mark anything that would make you offer less.

  • Dents, faded paint, cracked glass or a damaged bumper.
  • Rust, especially underneath or around the wheel openings.
  • Worn tires or brakes that will need replacing soon.
  • Warning lights on the dash.
  • Leaks on the driveway under the car.
  • Torn seats, smells or signs of damp.
  • Air conditioning, windows, locks or other things that do not work.
  • Service records, or a lack of them.

Remember that fixing the main problem does not fix these. A car with a new transmission and bad rust is still a rusty car, and a buyer will price it that way.

Title and history can change the value

A title brand affects what many buyers will pay. In Washington, title brands stay on the record indefinitely and are removed only if they were made in error. If your car has been in a major wreck, or you bought it used and are not sure of its past, check before you count on a clean-title value.

DOL’s buyer page points to the national vehicle title database (NMVTIS) for a history report with title, insurance loss and salvage information. The official consumer site is vehiclehistory.gov. Our title brands glossary explains the terms you may see.

Now find the value as it is

This is the number people tend to skip, and it can change the answer.

We work out our offers from year and model, condition, demand for parts, weight and size, and towing distance. You can call (206) 941-0612 or send up to 3 photos through our pickup form. A private buyer looks closely at mileage and appearance, while those five factors are about the car as a whole. That is why this value may look very different from the guide figure.

Put the values to work

Subtract the value as it is from the value once fixed. That is what the repair adds. Then set it beside a real written quote, which our guide to reading a repair estimate can help you check.

When the repair adds clearly more than it costs, that is a strong reason to fix the car, and you do not need anyone’s permission to do so. When it adds much less, you have your answer, or at least a good reason to get a second opinion. Our repair or junk guide walks through the rest of the decision.

Common questions

No single guide knows your local market or your car’s real condition. Use at least two, then check them against local listings for the same model. If they all point to a similar range, you can trust the range.
