How Vehicle Weight Affects a Junk Car Offer

Blog · By Free Junk Car Hauling · Updated · 4 min read

Metal is heavy and metal has value, so it is natural to think a junk car’s worth is its weight times a scrap price. You might even have tried the math. It is a reasonable starting thought, but it leaves out a lot of what a buyer looks at.

Here is what weight really does to an offer, how to find the figure for your own vehicle, and a mistake that is easy to make when you read the sticker in the door.

Short answer

Weight and size are one of five things we weigh, along with year and model, condition, parts demand and towing distance. A heavier vehicle has more metal, which helps, but missing parts or a long tow can outweigh that. The door sticker usually shows the maximum loaded weight, not the empty weight, so check the owner’s manual or manufacturer’s specs.

Why weight matters to a buyer

A hulk hauler’s vehicles may only be sold to a licensed wrecker or scrap processor. Ours go on to auto steel recyclers. There the fluids are drained, tires and batteries are removed, and it is crushed and melted down. The more metal it holds, the more material there is to recycle. That is why weight counts.

Size also matters for a practical reason. A long van or a big pickup takes up more of the flatbed and may need more care to load than a compact car. See our van and SUV page and truck page if you have something larger.

How to find your vehicle’s weight

Do this in order and stop when you have a number.

  1. Open the owner’s manual

Look in the specifications section for curb weight or empty weight. That is the vehicle with fluids but without passengers or cargo.

  2. Check the manufacturer’s specs

Search the exact year, model and trim. Trim and engine can change the figure, so match them as closely as you can.

  3. Read the driver’s door sticker, carefully

The label on the door or door frame often lists GVWR, or gross vehicle weight rating. That is the most the vehicle is rated to weigh when fully loaded, so it runs higher than the weight of the car itself. Do not quote it to a buyer as curb weight.

  4. If none of that works

Just tell the buyer the year, make, model and body type. A buyer can work from that.

TermWhat it meansUse it for an offer?
Curb weightThe empty vehicle, ready to driveYes, this is the useful figure
GVWRRated maximum when fully loaded, including people and cargoNo, it overstates the vehicle itself
Payload or GAWRHow much it can carry, or what an axle can carryNo

Why the simple weight math falls short

Scrap prices you see online can tempt you to multiply your way to an answer. There are several reasons that number will not match an offer.

  • The published weight assumes a whole vehicle. A car with no engine weighs less, and it is also missing something a buyer may want.
  • Not all of it is steel. A car also holds glass, plastic, rubber, fabric and fluids.
  • Someone has to move it. The truck, the driver and the distance are part of the job.
  • Scrap prices move. Metal markets go up and down, and a figure you read may be out of date or may not apply to whole vehicles.
  • Parts can matter more than metal. A lighter car that has wanted parts can be of more interest than a heavier one that does not.

This guide does not give a scrap figure, because a figure from a web page would not be about your vehicle. To see how the rest fits together, read what your junk car is worth.

When weight helps and when it does not

Your vehicleHow weight tends to play in
Complete full-size truck, van or large SUVSize and metal work in your favor. Tell the buyer the body type and whether it has a long bed, a lift or a heavy load on board.
Complete small carLess metal, but parts demand and a short tow can still help. Do not assume it is worthless.
Truck or SUV with the engine or transmission outIt is lighter than the spec sheet says and may count as incomplete. Incomplete vehicles may carry a pickup fee or may be declined, so say what is missing.
Vehicle loaded with scrap, tools or junkExtra weight inside is not a bonus. Clear it out before pickup, and ask first if you can’t.

One warning: do not try to add weight or pull parts to sell separately before you get a quote. If you are thinking about stripping the car, read whole or part it out first.

What to tell the buyer

  • Year, make, model and trim
  • Body type, and bed or cab size for a truck
  • Whether the engine, transmission and all wheels are on the vehicle
  • Curb weight, only if you found it, and where you found it
  • Where the vehicle is parked

Send these on our pickup form or call (206) 941-0612. We will look at all five factors and give you a number for your vehicle. You can see more about scrap car removal here.

Common questions

Start with the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s specifications for your exact year and trim. The door sticker often shows GVWR, which is the maximum loaded weight, and is not the same thing.
